JUST IN: Bulldogs to lose young winger for remainder of season due to…

Canterbury Bulldogs director of football Phil Gould has announced that winger Blake Wilson’s season is over due to a syndesmosis injury sustained on Saturday in reserve grade.

The 23-year-old, who joined the Bulldogs at the start of the 2023 NRL season and has played 21 games since his debut in Round 19 last year, had recently been playing in the NSW Cup but has seen intermittent first-grade action throughout the season.

Wilson has scored four tries in ten top-grade games this season, but his campaign is now concluded. Gould revealed on Twitter that Wilson picked up a syndesmosis injury and an ankle fracture during the reserve grade match against the St George Illawarra Dragons at Kogarah.

Gould commented on Wilson’s situation, saying, “Blake Wilson badly injured his ankle in NSW Cup yesterday. Scans have revealed an ankle fracture and syndesmosis injury … Unfortunately, that’s a bad … Off to surgery … We will fix it up and go again … Blake has had such a great season … He will bounce back … Tough kid.”

Although Gould did not provide a specific recovery timeline, syndesmosis surgery typically requires at least two months for recovery—longer than the remaining time in the season, even if the Bulldogs advance through the finals in either the top or reserve grade.

With Canterbury facing matches against the Dolphins, New Zealand Warriors, Manly Sea Eagles, and North Queensland Cowboys, Jeral Skelton is the likely candidate to be called up if there are further injuries or suspensions to starting wingers Jacob Kiraz and Josh Addo-Carr.
