Danny Röhl shocking admission after ‘hard to take’ defeat to Sunderland

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl has taken responsibility for the Owls’ heavy defeat to Sunderland. After a strong start to their Championship campaign with a 4-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle, Wednesday’s goal difference was wiped out following a 4-0 loss to the Black Cats.

The Owls began brightly at the Stadium of Light, but an 11th-minute header from Dennis Cirkin set them back, and they conceded two more goals before the 25th minute. A fourth goal just after halftime sealed the loss, leaving little room for recovery.

Röhl acknowledged that setbacks like this are part of his learning curve in English football and admitted he anticipated challenging games as the 2024/25 season progresses. “It’s hard to take, of course,” he said after the match. “After the last two games, it may have seemed easy, but I knew we would face moments like this during the season.

Our last defeat was on April 1st, so naturally, we were ambitious to come here and take something. We had belief and confidence, but as a manager, I’ll take responsibility for such a defeat. I’ll review whether we did everything right in our preparation. But this is football; it’s crucial now that we show a reaction and stay united.

“It’s easy to be together when you’re winning, but today we must prove that we can stick together after a significant defeat. We need to learn from this; it’s all part of the process. We’ll have good games, and we’ll have days like today.”

Wednesday’s schedule doesn’t get any easier, with Leeds United set to visit Hillsborough on Friday night. Fans will be hoping to see the same Owls team from gameweek one rather than the one that showed up in gameweek two.
