JUST NOW: Nashville SC have announced the departure of manager

Nashville SC have announced the departure of manager after a challenging start to the 2024 Major League Soccer season.

The news follows a significant 2-0 victory over Toronto FC, secured by late goals from Shaquell Moore and Teal Bunbury. Despite this win, it was only Nashville’s third in 12 games this season, leaving them in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, 14 points behind the leaders, Inter Miami.

Alongside Smith, assistant coach Steve Guppy has also exited the club as part of the managerial changes. Rumba Munthali will step in as interim manager while the club searches for a permanent replacement.

Nashville hopes that this early coaching change can propel the team toward securing a playoff spot for the fifth consecutive year.

Smith had been at the helm since Nashville’s inaugural MLS season in 2020, after leading the team for two seasons in the USL Championship.

He guided the team to the 2023 Leagues Cup final, where they were defeated by an Inter Miami team led by Lionel Messi.

Munthali’s first task as interim manager will be a home match against Atlanta United on Saturday, followed by an away game against Montreal the following weekend.

If Munthali can secure six points from these matches, he may be considered for the permanent role.
