JUST NOW: 2 Key Bruins player have announced their departure

Before last year’s training camp, the Boston Bruins signed Danton Heinen to a professional tryout (PTO) contract. After recording eight goals and 22 points in 65 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2022-23 season, Heinen struggled to secure a deal over the summer.

However, his impressive performance in the preseason earned him a spot on the Bruins’ roster.

This decision proved beneficial for both Heinen and the Bruins. Heinen not only revived his career with the team but also became one of their key offensive contributors.

Over 74 games, the Langley, British Columbia native scored 17 goals and added 36 points. Thanks to his strong season, Heinen secured a two-year, $4.5 million contract with the Vancouver Canucks in free agency.

While the Bruins made important offseason acquisitions with their available funds, they will undoubtedly miss Heinen, particularly given his previous $775,000 cap hit. In 2023-24, Heinen was one of the Bruins’ most versatile players, capable of fitting into various roles within their lineup.

He spent a significant portion of the season in the top six due to his solid production, but he also contributed effectively in the bottom six and on the penalty kill when needed. The Bruins will certainly feel the absence of Heinen’s versatility and impact.

Overall, Heinen proved to be an excellent low-risk, high-reward signing for the Bruins last season. As a result, he earned a well-deserved payday from his hometown team, and it will be intriguing to see how he performs with the Canucks moving forward.
