Reece Walsh ‘kept away’ amid new revelation Broncos fullback was subject of club probe

Brisbane superstar Reece Walsh has been kept away from the media as it was revealed that his on-field altercation with teammate Corey Oates was the focus of an internal investigation. Ahead of the Broncos’ upcoming clash with their Queensland rivals, the Cowboys, on Saturday night, Brisbane coach Kevin Walters felt it necessary to speak with both players to prevent any significant rifts within the team.

The incident occurred during the Broncos’ recent loss to the Gold Coast Titans, where Walsh criticized Oates after a play broke down, adding to a season already filled with unwanted headlines. This comes just ten months after the Broncos nearly ended their long premiership drought, only to lose the grand final to Penrith in a heartbreaking fashion. The team’s fortunes have taken a dramatic turn since then, with eight losses in their last nine games, highlighting the mounting tension and pressure within the club.

Walsh was withdrawn from media engagements this week, leaving his perspective on the incident still unknown.

Regarding the incident, Walters stated, “We’ve certainly addressed that as a club and as individuals. We’ve moved on from that.”

Corey Oates, who has been dropped from the team for the upcoming match against North Queensland, also downplayed any lingering issues. Speaking to KISS FM, Oates said, “He (Walsh) was just angry because I ended up running the wrong line. He’s so passionate and cares so much. He’s just so emotional.

“After the game, he came to me and said sorry. I said, ‘mate, we are all good’. I told him, ‘I ran the wrong line, you threw a hard pass…it doesn’t matter, mate’. We’re fine.”

The Walsh drama is not the only fire Walters had to put out this week. He was also forced to defend his training methods after Tristan Sailor and Jesse Arthars conceded standards needed to lift.

The coach was blindsided by the accusation. “I’m not sure where those comments came from. We have trained well and we’re very much looking forward to the (Cowboys) game,” Walters said.
