Breaking news: Oscar Klefbom officially annouced his retirement from NHL

Oscar Klefbom has announced his retirement from the NHL after seven seasons. The 31-year-old confirmed his decision in an interview with Swedish outlet Värmlands Folkblad, following a four-year hiatus from professional hockey.

Klefbom, who has been sidelined since 2021 due to a persistent shoulder injury, had been managing the pain throughout his final NHL season. Despite attempts to return to the ice, he was unable to do so without discomfort.

Ranked sixth among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Klefbom was selected 19th overall by the Edmonton Oilers. He won the IIHF World Junior Championship with Sweden in 2012 and transitioned to North America for the 2013-14 NHL season.

At his peak, Klefbom was one of the league’s top defensive players and played a crucial role in the early Connor McDavid era with the Oilers.

Klefbom, 31, told Värmlands Folkblad that he isn’t closing the door on his hockey career entirely, despite ending his current playing stint. “I don’t feel old enough to sit at home and enjoy retired life,” he said.

Over his NHL career, Klefbom played 378 games, recording 34 goals, 122 assists, and 156 points, along with 7 points in 16 playoff games.
