Arsenal Yet to Make Mikel Merino Offer, Move a Matter of Time

The Gunners are looking to sign a new midfielder during the current transfer window and are reportedly close to agreeing terms with Mikel Merino. While the club has not yet made a formal approach, it is only a “matter of time” before he joins Arsenal. The 28-year-old has a £52 million release clause, but the Gunners are aware they might secure him for £26 million, given he is in the final year of his contract.

The London giants have had a quiet summer transfer window, making only two signings: David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori. Given that the club finished second in the Premier League for the second consecutive season, more was anticipated. However, there could be significant activity this month.

The club’s hierarchy recently created space and capital with Emile Smith Rowe’s move to Fulham and could now use those funds to acquire Merino from Sociedad. The Spanish star has already given his approval for a transfer, so it is up to the Gunners to negotiate a suitable fee.

Merino would be a strong addition for the left-sided central midfield position. He led Europe’s top-five leagues in duels won during the 2023/24 season and excelled in recoveries, tackling, and creativity in the final third. The ex-Newcastle United player also recorded eight goals and five assists last term. Arsenal will need to act quickly, as Merino has not ruled out a move to Barcelona.
