Catalans Dragons set to sign new recruits this week as part of Super League title ambitions

The Catalans are gearing up to introduce more new recruits to strengthen their Super League title aspirations this season.

Coach Steve McNamara revealed that he plans to add “one or two” new players this week, following the successful return of Sam Tomkins and the debut of NRL prop Jarrod Wallace in their 26-14 home victory over Hull FC on Saturday night.

He stated, “We’ve got space left on the salary cap this year, and we can still make additions before Thursday’s deadline if we find the right players. It might be more than one. We’ve lost some leadership and we’ll address that with next year’s recruits, but our focus is on this season and the immediate challenges ahead.

“With our current power game, we dominate possession and field position against most teams; we just need a bit more class and edge. I believe it’ll come, and we may bring in a player or two to help in those areas.”

Catalans have signed Luke Keary and Nick Cotric from the NRL for next season, along with UK-based Tommy Makinson and Oliver Partington. There are indications that Cotric might arrive sooner to assist the Dragons for the rest of this season.

After their victory over Hull, Catalans moved up to fourth in the league table. McNamara praised Tomkins, saying, “Sam was frustrated because he made some errors, but his voice, vision, and ability to coach on the field are invaluable.”

Tomkins admitted, “The knee feels fine, but my lungs were struggling at the end. It was great to be back with my teammates at this special place. It was a tough game and not a perfect performance—I made too many mistakes. The support from fans was humbling, and I feel blessed by their comments. I’ll be better next game with some extra recovery.”

Meanwhile, McNamara mentioned that they haven’t ruled out winger Tom Johnstone for the rest of the season despite his broken leg. “There’s hope, and we haven’t given up. He has a fractured fibula but doesn’t need surgery, so we’re hopeful for a straightforward recovery. Tom is determined to return for the last few games and the play-offs.”
