JUST IN: sacked  Charlton Athletic boss signs for Premier League club

Former Charlton Athletic head coach Michael Appleton is set to join Premier League side Manchester United in a backroom role, six months after being dismissed by the League One club following a poor run of results.

The 48-year-old, who developed his career in the Red Devils’ youth academy as a player, was let go from his position at The Valley shortly after a 1-0 defeat to Northampton Town in January. That loss marked his 12th consecutive match without a win, leaving Charlton just four points above the relegation zone in League One.

Now, Appleton is poised to make a significant leap up the leagues as he takes on a position at Old Trafford. According to The Sun, he will be appointed to Manchester United’s transfer team, with a focus on managing loan deals.

Appleton was dismissed from his role at The Valley in January.

The news follows Manchester United’s recent acquisition of sporting director Dan Ashworth from Premier League rivals Newcastle United. Appleton previously collaborated with Ashworth during their time at West Brom. Former Tranmere Rovers boss Les Parry, who currently holds the role, is reportedly set to be replaced, according to The Sun’s report.

Despite spending five years at Manchester United as a youth player, Appleton made just two senior appearances before moving to Preston North End in 1997. His playing career was cut short at 27 due to a prolonged knee injury.

During his tenure at Charlton Athletic, Appleton oversaw the signings of Conor Coventry from West Ham, Macaulay Gillesphey from Plymouth Argyle, and Rarmani Edmonds-Green from Huddersfield Town. He also facilitated loan deals for Lewis Fiorini, Tyreeq Bakinson, and Freddie Ladapo.

Charlton Athletic confirmed his departure in January with the following statement: “Charlton Athletic can confirm that Michael Appleton has left the club with immediate effect after being relieved of his role as Head Coach. The club would like to thank Michael for his efforts during his time in charge.”
