Former Saints coach Alan Dickens says joining Newcastle Falcons was a ‘no-brainer’ at what he describes as an ‘exciting time for the club’. Drafted in by Falcons boss Steve Diamond, Dickens will oversee both the club’s attack and defence.

The 48-year-old coach spent over a decade with the Saints in various coaching roles, having previously played for the club. Last season, he was the attack and backs coach at Leicester Tigers and also has experience as head coach of England Under-20s. Now, Dickens is eager to start his new chapter with the Falcons.

“I’ve known Steve (Diamond) since around 2001 when I first became a professional rugby player, and we’ve had a few opportunities to work together,” Dickens told the Newcastle Falcons website. “He’s someone I hold in high regard, and when he approached me for the position, it was a no-brainer. It’s certainly an exciting time for the club.”

Dickens will take on the role of senior coach at the Falcons, overseeing both attack and defence. He is looking forward to working with the club’s strong group of loyal coaches, including Micky Ward, Mark Laycock, James Ponton, and Tom Williams.

“Everything we work towards will be team-focused, which aligns with what Steve wants,” Dickens said. “We aim to build a close-knit environment where everything is reflected in our team performance on the pitch. I’m very much a team player, and I think that’s vital for our success.”

Dickens is also excited about developing talented youngsters at Kingston Park. “Newcastle produces a lot of quality players through their academy. Dimes is committed to bringing those players through and giving them the chance, which is something I’m looking forward to,” he said. “I enjoyed my role with England Under-20s, and it’s rewarding to see a focus on developing young players.”

Reflecting on the Falcons’ performance last season, Dickens believes they can improve significantly. “The results were disappointing, but many games, especially at home, were close and hard-fought. The Falcons were very competitive and not far off from getting the results they worked for,” he said.

Dickens has been impressed with the support the Falcons receive at Kingston Park. “I attended a game last year, and the number of fans and supporters was impressive. It’s clear the local people are behind the club,” he said.

Director of rugby Steve Diamond is delighted to have Dickens on his coaching team. “Alan’s extensive experience in playing and coaching in the Premiership will be invaluable. He embodies the mentality we are instilling throughout the club and understands the challenge ahead. His commitment to hard work will be crucial in helping us achieve our goal of becoming a highly respected Premiership team,” Diamond said.
