Cats coach backs troubled star after scary incident

Geelong coach Chris Scott has minimized the significance of star forward Tyson Stengle’s nightclub incident following the club’s round 20 victory over North Melbourne.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, paramedics were called to the Bloom nightclub in Geelong after the Cats’ 40-point win over the Roos on Saturday afternoon in Launceston. Stengle was subsequently taken to University Geelong Hospital at around 2:30 AM in a “serious condition,” according to a statement from Ambulance Victoria.

He was released hours later and returned to training on Monday.

The 25-year-old premiership star also retained his spot in the team, a decision that Scott has supported.

“It wasn’t ideal, but it wasn’t a huge issue in our minds,” Scott said on Friday.

“He seems very good to me… and they’re supremely confident that he’s in good shape.

“He’s certainly trained well, moved well, and seems well enough in himself.

“He’s excited to go out and play well, which is what we expect.”

The Cats also decided against punishing Stengle for his actions, with Scott maintaining that it was an “error” in judgment and nothing more serious.

“It’s not an authoritarian regime, where the coaches warn that if you behave badly, you’ll get turfed out,” he said.

The Cats will face Adelaide at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
