Recent Steelers draft pick is already in danger of losing a roster spot, might depart

The Steelers had an impressive draft in 2024, but one recent selection is already at risk of losing a roster spot. While it’s always encouraging when all recent draft picks make the team, it’s not always realistic or reasonable. Last year, the Pittsburgh Steelers saw significant contributions from their 2023 draft class, and the future looks promising for this group.

Typically, the higher a player is selected in the NFL Draft, the better their chances of making the roster. Teams are inclined to give players chosen with high draft capital every opportunity to prove themselves. Conversely, players selected with lower draft investments are not guaranteed spots on the 53-man roster. Unfortunately, one Steelers draft pick from 2024 is already in danger of not making the team.

Logan Lee is on the outside looking in at the Steelers roster

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a specific preference for their interior defensive line, favoring tall players they can develop to play base defensive end in their 3-4 defense. With Logan Lee, the front office was willing to overlook his shorter arms and lighter frame (just 281 pounds at the NFL Combine).

However, early in training camp, Lee appears to be buried on the roster. During team sessions, he typically lines up with the third-string defense, indicating his slim chances of making the final roster.

The depth chart ahead of him includes players like Cam Heyward, Keeanu Benton, Larry Ogunjobi, and Montravius Adams. Additionally, DeMarvin Leal has been a standout in training camp, and Isaiahh Loudermilk is getting more looks with the second-team defense than Lee. This doesn’t even account for veteran Dean Lowry, who is currently nursing an injury.

Lee’s clearest path to the roster is challenging. The Steelers would need to keep a seventh defensive lineman for him to make the team, and he would likely need to outperform Loudermilk or Leal for the final spot. Alternatively, an injury to one of the other defensive linemen could open a spot for him.

While it’s not impossible for Logan Lee to make the Steelers’ 53-man roster, the outlook isn’t encouraging. Pittsburgh’s sixth-round draft pick from 2024 is trending toward starting his NFL career on the practice squad.
