Darren Moore signs another former Sheffield Wednesday player at Port Vale

Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore is leading a squad overhaul at Port Vale this summer.

Moore experienced League One relegation with Port Vale last season, just a year after securing promotion from the third tier with Sheffield Wednesday. His time with Wednesday ended abruptly in June 2023 amid reports of a dispute with owner Dejphon Chansiri over salary, which Moore denied.

After his stint with Sheffield Wednesday, Moore managed Huddersfield Town, where he secured just three wins in 23 games. He took charge of Port Vale in February this year but managed only two wins in 17 games, leading to the team’s relegation to League Two.

Since then, Port Vale has signed 10 new players, including George Byers from Sheffield Wednesday earlier this summer. Moore has now added another former Owls player to his ranks, Ben Heneghan, who has signed a two-year deal after leaving Fleetwood Town.

Heneghan was part of Sheffield Wednesday’s 2022/23 promotion-winning season, featuring 10 times in League One before an injury limited his appearances and led to his release. Moore praised the signing, stating, “Ben is another player who I know really well from my time at Sheffield Wednesday. He will add real competition to our defensive unit. He is an aggressive, aerially dominant leader of a center half and a brilliant character to have in and around the dressing room.”
