The unwanted records St Helens broke in damaging Warrington Wolves defeat

St Helens have now lost four consecutive games for the first time in over six years, following a damaging 24-10 home defeat to Warrington Wolves on Friday night. The pressure is mounting on Red V chief Paul Wellens.

Despite playing with a numerical advantage for 60 of the 80 minutes at the Totally Wicked Stadium in Round 18, Saints were beaten by Warrington. Wire forward James Harrison received a red card midway through the first half, leaving his team a man down.

The visitors also faced adversity with their captain, Stefan Ratchford, failing a Head Injury Assessment (HIA) on his 36th birthday. Matty Nicholson was then sent to the sin-bin in the second half.

However, Sam Burgess’ side led 12-0 at halftime and managed to withstand a second-half surge from St Helens. The score remained 12-6 until Adam Holroyd and Nicholson scored tries late in the game to secure the win.

Boos echoed around the TW Stadium at the final whistle, as Saints struggled in attack, failing to score despite having 12 tackles inside Warrington’s 20-meter line at one point.

Friday night’s loss marks the fourth consecutive defeat for Wellens’ men, who have previously been beaten by Salford Red Devils (20-18), Castleford Tigers (8-6), Wigan Warriors (16-12), and now Warrington.

This is the first time any Saints team has lost four in a row since a similar streak in June 2016, which also included a home defeat against Warrington.

Kieron Cunningham’s side in 2016, who would later be defeated by the Wolves in the play-off semi-finals, lost to Huddersfield Giants (48-20) at Magic Weekend and continued with losses to Hull FC (32-24), Warrington (26-4), and Catalans Dragons (33-16) during that run.

By April of the following year, Cunningham was sacked by Saints.

Additionally, Saints set an unwanted record by being scoreless at halftime for the first time this year. Their first points came in the 46th minute when Agnatius Paasi scored a try.

In his post-match interview with Sky Sports, Wellens acknowledged the supporters’ frustrations, stating that some of their sentiments are warranted.

Next weekend, Saints will make a short trip to Leigh.
