Jye Menzie has signed a one-year extension with Essendon, securing his place with the team until the end of 2025.
Menzie, who has played nine AFL games, has become a consistent contributor in various roles under coach Brad Scott. Selected as Pick 15 in the 2022 Mid-Season Draft, the 21-year-old has made 32 appearances for the Bombers, including 21 last season, during which he scored 23 goals primarily as a forward.
Recently, Menzie has expanded his skill set by playing in the backline and on the wing, showcasing his versatility, which has likely pleased coach Scott.
“I’m so grateful to be signing on for this great club. I’m excited and optimistic about the direction we are going, and I’m thrilled to be a part of this journey we are on,” Menzie said.
“I love the playing group, and the ceiling hasn’t even been scratched yet with what we can achieve together. I’d also like to thank the coaches and staff for backing me and giving me this opportunity.
“I still have the same drive and passion as I did the night I was drafted and can’t wait for what’s to come individually and as a collective.”
Essendon GM Daniel McPherson commented on Menzie’s development since joining the club.
“Since arriving at the club in 2022, Jye has demonstrated his determination and willingness to grow as a footballer and take his game to the next level,” McPherson said.
“Jye has continuously taken feedback on board and has embraced any challenge given to him. We look forward to seeing his growth continue into 2025.”
The news coincides with Essendon tall Vigo Visentini also signing a one-year extension after joining the club as a rookie.
Menzie is currently outside the 23 but will be pushing his case as the club prepares for its clash against Adelaide on Friday.
