JUST IN: insider gives huge update on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s trade status

A new report indicates that the Toronto Blue Jays have no plans to trade Vladimir Guerrero Jr. before the July 30 trade deadline. However, there remains a particular obstacle in trade discussions.

As of today’s MLB games, the Blue Jays are in last place in the American League East. Compounding their struggles, despite it being easier than ever to secure a spot in the MLB Playoffs, Toronto is still 8.5 games behind the final Wild Card position.

All signs indicate that the Blue Jays will be sellers before this month’s MLB trade deadline. However, the team has understandable reservations about trading their two most valuable assets, Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. While it makes sense to entertain offers for these homegrown stars, given that they only have a year left on their contracts, both are young and are the top players on the roster.

Among the two, Bichette seems more likely to be moved. On Friday, MLB Network league insider Mark Feinsand reinforced the narrative that Guerrero Jr. will stay in Canada, at least for the remainder of this season.

Toronto Blue Jays still have no intention of trading Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

“I doubt a Vlad extension is coming anytime soon, but that’s not to say he won’t wind up signing one in the offseason,” Feinsand wrote. “The Blue Jays insist they’re not trading him, and some sources I have spoken to believe Toronto wants to keep him — and that Vlad is open to staying there. The only question will be the contract and whether the two sides can close the gap.”

Feinsand notes that the team and the first baseman are still far apart on a deal. The four-time All-Star is allegedly seeking a superstar-level contract, akin to the one he might have commanded after hitting 48 home runs in 2021.

However, Guerrero has not matched that performance in the two and a half seasons since, and the Blue Jays are seeking a contract that reflects his more recent play. Feinsand suggests that a strong finish to 2024 and a stellar 2025 season could improve Guerrero’s prospects for a substantial contract extension.
