Brisbane Roar head coach Alex Smith has committed to continue coaching the Liberty A-League side for the 2024-25 season. He has extended his contract with the Roar, a role he assumed after taking over from Garrath McPherson before Round 5 of the previous season.

As a former assistant with both Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City, Smith is dedicated to nurturing Queensland talent and fostering the development of the next generation of Matildas in Australia. His efforts have already borne fruit with players like Sharn Freier, who made her international debut following a standout season under his guidance.

“It’s a new era for the women’s program,” Smith emphasized.

“I’m excited about having a full pre-season to instill my principles from the outset. My goal is to create an entertaining and effective style of football that resonates on the standings. We’ll be aggressive in defense, assertive in possession, and purposeful in attack.

“Developing the next generation of national team players is a key objective set by the club’s management and is personally very important to me.

“We’ve strategically brought in new signings to help achieve this goal, and I’m eager to work with this dynamic young squad that I know our supporters will rally behind.

“I aim to bring excitement to our play that our supporters will enjoy and support wholeheartedly. I want Brisbane games to become a regular outing for all football fans. With a long off-season ahead, I’m eagerly anticipating getting started.”

“Brisbane’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Zac Anderson, expressed his pride in offering Alex another opportunity to lead the women’s program for the 2024-25 season.

“Alex has earned this opportunity through his efforts in reshaping the team, with a strong emphasis on nurturing the next generation of Queensland talent.

“At this juncture, we believe stability is crucial, and Alex has established solid foundations upon which to build further.

“We’re excited to see our women’s squad evolve in the coming weeks and eagerly anticipate the start of the season.”
