BREAKING NEWS: Coventry City take action in transfer pursuit of European midfielder

Coventry City are interested in signing midfielder Antoine Bernede from Lausanne-Sport this summer.

According to a report from Swiss outlet 4-4-2.ch, the Sky Blues have already contacted the player’s representatives to express their interest.

Bernede, who came through the academy at French giants PSG, began his senior career there before moving to Austria to join RB Salzburg in February 2019. He then joined Lausanne-Sport on loan in the January 2023 transfer window, and that move was made permanent in the summer of 2023. Now, it appears he is once again attracting attention in the market.

Coventry City pursuing Antoine Bernede deal with Lausanne-Sport

Coventry City are showing interest in securing the services of Antoine Bernede from Lausanne-Sport this summer, according to the latest update.

It is reported that the Championship club has spoken to the midfielder’s representatives, indicating their intent to sign him. However, they have yet to make a concrete offer to his current club.

Lausanne-Sport is determined to retain Bernede this summer, so it would take a significant offer to secure his services. With two years remaining on the 26-year-old’s contract, Lausanne-Sport is not under pressure to sell.

Bernede has already turned down a move to French top-flight side AJ Auxerre during the current transfer window. Last season, Bernede’s team finished 10th in the Swiss top flight, narrowly avoiding a relegation play-off place in the 12-team league.

Coventry, meanwhile, finished ninth in the Championship last season, nine points adrift of the play-off spots. They have made three new first-team signings this summer: winger Raphael Borges Rodriguez, midfielder Jack Rudoni, and centre-back Luis Binks, who was on loan with the Sky Blues last season. Ephron Mason-Clark will also debut following his January move from Peterborough United.

Antoine Bernede deal would be an interesting one for Coventry City

A move to sign Antoine Bernede would be an intriguing one for Coventry City at this moment in time.

On one hand, his pedigree, which includes numerous titles from his time at RB Salzburg, suggests he could be a valuable addition for the Sky Blues in the Championship.

However, considering the current options in their squad, another midfielder might not be a priority for Coventry. Ben Sheaf, Victor Torp, Josh Eccles, Jamie Allen, Jack Rudoni, and Kasey Palmer are all adept at playing either in the holding role or as a number 10, indicating that Mark Robins is well-stocked in those areas.

As a result, it could be a gamble to spend on Bernede now, especially considering suggestions that he may not come cheap.

Allocating funds for Bernede could take away from the budget needed to reinforce other areas of the squad that may require more significant attention.

With that in mind, it will be worth monitoring just how strongly Coventry pursues a deal for Bernede in the coming weeks.
