NC State Basketball Hero Eyes Third Show in Las Vegas

Former NC State basketball big man DJ Burns has posted encouraging Summer League stat lines and is looking for more. Undrafted forward DJ Burns will play at least three more games with the Cleveland Cavaliers (1-1) at the NBA 2K25 Summer League in Las Vegas. The NC State product is on an Exhibit 10 deal, aiming to secure a permanent spot in the league.

In his two outings thus far, the 23-year-old has combined for 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals, and one block in 27 minutes of action. He’s shooting 55.6 percent from the field and is 1-for-2 from the free-throw line. Notably, the Cavaliers have outscored their opponents by seven points while Burns has been on the court.

Burns and the Cavaliers are now gearing up for a showdown against the unbeaten Golden State Warriors (2-0) at 10 p.m. ET Wednesday on NBA TV. Given Burns’ solid production on both ends of the floor and the positive energy he brought from the Wolfpack’s epic Final Four run last season, the 6-foot-9 forward is likely to see significant minutes off the bench once again.

The Cavaliers wrap up pool play against the Los Angeles Lakers at 9 p.m. ET Thursday on ESPN. If they finish among the top four in the 30-team standings, they’ll advance to the playoffs, with the semifinals on Saturday and the championship bout on Sunday. Even if they don’t reach the playoffs, they’ll play a fifth and final contest on Saturday or Sunday.

NC State basketball is nearing a significant recruitment decision with Homewood-Flossmoor High School’s rising senior Bryce Heard, who recently visited the program and is now finalizing his college choice. The 6-foot-5, 190-pound wing, a highly regarded four-star prospect ranked No. 89 overall in the 2025 Composite by 247Sports, has narrowed his options down to NC State, Xavier, Mississippi State, and Southern Cal. Heard plans to announce his decision next Wednesday.

Back in May, Bryce Heard mentioned his intention to visit several potential suitors over the summer and fall. However, it seems that the 17-year-old enjoyed his stay in Raleigh so much that he feels ready to make his decision. His visit to NC State was the only official visit he made.

Meanwhile, NC State basketball head coach Kevin Keatts and his team already have one commitment for the 2025 class from four-star guard Ricardo Greer Jr. of Archbishop Alter High School (Ohio). Ranked No. 161 overall in the class, Greer committed to the Wolfpack a week before Bryce Heard’s visit in June.
