GOOD NEWS: NC State shortstop selected in 12th round of MLB draft

The San Diego Padres selected NC State shortstop Brandon Butterworth with the 360th overall pick (15th pick in the 12th round) of the 2024 MLB Draft, making him the third Wolfpack player chosen this year. While picks after the 10th round don’t have a designated slot value, they can sign for up to $125,000 without affecting the team’s overall bonus pool. Any amount exceeding $125,000 would be deducted from the team’s pool.

Butterworth transferred to NC State for the 2024 season after spending his first two collegiate years at Western Carolina. At NC State, he posted a .250/.369/.420 slash line, with a 14.7% walk rate, 14.0% strikeout rate, 13 stolen bases in 14 attempts, along with 13 doubles and 7 home runs, while starting all 61 games for a team that reached the College World Series. Over his three-year college career, Butterworth compiled a .286/.378/.447 slash line, with an 11.6% walk rate, 13.2% strikeout rate, 42 stolen bases in 47 attempts, 47 doubles, 11 triples, and 15 home runs.
The right-handed hitting Monroe native, Brandon Butterworth, possesses defensive versatility, having started at second base during his time at Western Carolina, and with the speed and arm strength to also play in the outfield. This ability to serve as a utility player should benefit Butterworth in professional baseball. However, Butterworth still has a year of eligibility left and could choose to return to NC State. The influence of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) money could play a significant role in his decision regarding the draft.
