Wycombe Wanderers expert assesses ‘attentive’ rumoured Reading arrival

James Richings, a Wycombe Wanderers, believes that Joe Jacobson, reportedly on the verge of joining Reading, could be instrumental in rebuilding the club.

Jacobson, 37, has amassed over 400 appearances as a left-back for Wycombe over the past decade. Despite featuring sparingly last season with just six League One appearances, he began preparing for his post-playing career by undertaking a Football Management course through the PFA, alongside former Royals striker Dave Kitson.

If the takeover from former Wycombe owner Rob Couhig is finalized, Jacobson is expected to assume a boardroom role at Reading. Discussions between Jacobson and Couhig, aged 75 and a former lawyer, have been ongoing at the SCL Stadium and Bearwood. The Telegraph reported that the deal could be concluded within two weeks.

Speaking to The Bucks Free Press, Richings provided insights into Jacobson’s potential impact at Reading: “He’s incredibly knowledgeable, not just about football but overall. He’s very intelligent, articulate, and a real people person. Given his decade-long tenure at Wycombe, he’s well-equipped to bring transparency and leadership to Reading.”

Richings continued, “While Jacobson lacks direct experience in such a role, his leadership as Wycombe’s captain and his close collaboration with Couhig over the past five years have prepared him well. He understands what it takes to achieve success.”

Regarding Jacobson’s potential influence on Reading’s rebuild, Richings emphasized, “His experience as captain at Wycombe, nurturing young talent and achieving success on the pitch, positions him well to identify and develop young players for Reading. His transition to a boardroom role will be closely watched, but he has the support and admiration of the Wycombe community.”

Richings concluded, “He’s not just adored here for his football prowess but also for being a genuine, approachable person who connects well with everyone.”
