Taylan May signed by new team just hours after he was sacked by Penrith Panthers

In the early hours of this morning, the Penrith Panthers confirmed the release of outside back Taylan May. However, reports have now emerged that the 22-year-old is in England, training with the Hull KR academy.

May’s dismissal from the Panthers followed charges of three counts of domestic violence and one count of stalking. He is scheduled to face trial in Australia in March 2025.

It has been reported in Australia that the three-time consecutive champions, Penrith, had been seeking a way to release May following the allegations. According to The Daily Telegraph, the two parties reached a “confidential settlement.”

The Penrith Panthers shared the following statement: “Taylan May is departing the Penrith Panthers effective immediately and is seeking other opportunities. With respect to all parties, the club will make no further comment on the matter.”

New reports indicate that May’s “other opportunities” involve training with Hull KR in England. Renowned NRL journalist The Mole reported on social media: “BREAKING: Taylan May reportedly set to train with Hull KR youth team in Super League after parting ways with Penrith Panthers.”

Hull KR has an established youth team that has produced some of the club’s best talents, with star player Mikey Lewis being a prime example. However, the reports of Taylan May training with Hull KR remain unconfirmed by the club.

Taylan May has a connection to Hull KR as his brother Tyrone plays for the Robins. With the NRL’s ‘stand down’ policy in effect, Taylan is prohibited from any activity with NRL clubs, preventing him from training with his other brother Terrell’s team, the Sydney Roosters.

It is unclear if Taylan May was permitted to leave Australia given his upcoming court case next year. However, the wording of Penrith’s statement indicating that the 22-year-old was “seeking other opportunities” suggests that a move to Hull KR and a possible switch to Super League might be in the works.

Currently, Hull KR does not have a quota spot available should they wish to sign him, and they are already strong in the centre positions with players like Peta Hiku, Oli Goldart, Jack Broadbent, and Tom Opacic all performing well.
