Steve Evans has made a pledge to fans ahead of the SkyBet League One season.

The Millers boss has informed the Rotherham Advertiser that he will personally purchase the club’s 7,001st season ticket and also contribute to the bar tab for the season opener.

Swedish goalkeeper Viktor Johansson left Rotherham United at the end of last season and, as a parting gift, paid for 600 pints at the Cutlers’ Arms pub near the AESSEAL New York Stadium on the final day of the campaign.

Former Stevenage manager Steve Evans has pledged to match the goalkeeper’s gesture, promising to contribute similarly if the club reaches 7,000 season ticket sales before the season opener on August 10. He has gone one step further by committing to purchasing the 7,001st season ticket if the club sells that many.

The Millers are gearing up for another season in the third tier after a tough relegation last term.

Rotherham United has already sold over 6,500 season tickets and is aiming to surpass the 7,000 mark. Speaking to the Rotherham Advertiser, Steve Evans expressed his admiration for the club’s supporters, calling it a “pleasure” to reward them.

Rotherham is considered one of the promotion favorites for the upcoming season, having added players like Sean Raggett, Joe Rafferty, and Jonson Clarke-Harris to their squad from 2023/24.

Steve Evans often faces criticism from rival supporters, but this is a commendable gesture from him.

Fans are the lifeblood of any football club, and it’s always heartening when managers and players recognize their importance. Johansson’s gesture at the end of his Rotherham United tenure was a fitting tribute, and this act from the returning cult-hero manager is equally appreciated.
