JUST IN: Port Vale defender has been signed by League two rivals

Grimsby Town have signed defender Lewis Cass on a two-year contract following his release from Port Vale.

The 24-year-old made 71 appearances for Port Vale over three seasons and ended last term on loan at League Two champions Stockport County. Cass’ arrival compensates for the departure of Toby Mullarkey, who was sold to Crawley Town for an undisclosed fee.

Similar to Mullarkey, Cass is a versatile right-sided defender capable of playing both center-back and right-back. He recently played on the right of a back three and as a full-back in a four during his short stint with Stockport last season.

David Artell revealed that Town missed out on signing the former Newcastle United youth player in January, but they have now secured him to replace any versatility lost with Mullarkey’s departure.

Grimsby’s head coach said, “I’m delighted we have been able to sign Lewis because I feel he will improve us in that area of the pitch. We have had a longstanding interest in Lewis and actually tried to sign him back in January.

“We knew we were getting a good player with the right character and someone who also knows what’s required to win promotion out of this league following his spells with Port Vale and Stockport.

“I’m now looking forward to working with him day-to-day and helping him develop as a player.”

Town has continued to bolster their new-look backline, with Cass joining defenders Tyrell Warren, Cameron McJannet, and Matty Carson this summer, along with goalkeeper Jordan Wright.

The Mariners’ new defensive addition brings with him multiple League Two promotions, knowing what it takes to succeed in the league. He hopes to leverage that experience for the squad.

Cass commented, “I’m buzzing to get it over the line. It’s been in the pipeline for a few weeks, so I’m glad to be here. The set-up is brilliant and I’m ready to go.”

“I’ve been involved in a couple of promotions recently, and we’ve got a good squad here. Hopefully, everyone can push each other. I’m naturally a full-back, but I can also slot into a back three. I’m a fit lad who likes to get up and down and also defend one-on-one.”
