NC State Basketball Gem All Set for Pro Debut

The NC State basketball star has enough charisma to make even Summer League feel like must-see TV.

DJ Burns is set to make his debut in an NBA jersey on Friday afternoon as part of the NBA 2K25 Summer League in Las Vegas. Ahead of his chance to showcase his talents as a professional with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the former two-year NC State forward spoke extensively to the media on Wednesday.

Unsurprisingly, the now-nationally beloved NCAA Tournament Cinderella big man exuded positive energy, brightening the day for some reporters. Spencer Davies of Cavaliers On SI noted that “DJ Burns was a joy to speak with for the first time” while sharing highlights from their conversation.

The 23-year-old from Rock Hill, S.C., known for his relentless energy and slick moves that propelled the Wolfpack to an unforgettable Final Four run in March Madness, has shed nearly 50 pounds, aiming to prove his defensive capabilities to NBA scouts.

It’s uncertain if DJ Burns’ performances will lead to a two-way deal next season, but the NC State standout is sure to be a joy to watch as he begins his pro career this weekend with the Cavaliers on a Summer League contract.

Burns and his Cleveland teammates will face the Orlando Magic in Las Vegas at 4 p.m. ET Friday (NBA TV). They will then play against the Milwaukee Bucks at 3:30 p.m. Sunday (NBA TV), the Golden State Warriors at 10 p.m. Wednesday (NBA TV), and the Los Angeles Lakers at 9 p.m. Thursday (ESPN).
