Former Wellington Phoenix man has returned to the club

The Wellington Phoenix have made a significant addition to their squad for the 2024/25 A-League Men’s season by signing All Whites winger Marco Rojas.

Rojas is set to return to his former club on a one-year deal, having started his professional career with the Phoenix.

The 32-year-old debuted for the Phoenix in 2009, making 20 appearances before moving to Melbourne Victory. His stellar performance there earned him the Johnny Warren Medal in 2013.

“I’m really excited because of the amount of talent Marco has,” said Phoenix head coach Giancarlo Italiano. “My goal is to get him close to where he was in the 2016-17 A-League season, which I believe was his best. We’re the right club for him to thrive, giving him the freedom to play and express himself. If we can get a fit Marco firing, he’s going to help the team’s progression and improve our style of play.”

Internationally, Rojas has made 45 appearances for the All Whites, scoring five goals.

After three seasons in Melbourne, Rojas moved to Germany with Bundesliga side Stuttgart but faced a challenging period before returning to Victory. He later played for Herenveen in the Netherlands, Sonderjyske Fodbold in Denmark, had a third stint with Melbourne Victory, and played for Colo-Colo in Chile. Most recently, he spent the first half of 2024 with Brisbane Roar, scoring two goals in five games.

Rojas’ return is a significant boost for the Phoenix, especially after losing Alex Paulsen to English Premier League side Bournemouth and Ben Old to French Ligue 1 club Saint-Etienne.
