Three players who may not play for NYCFC again

The summer transfer window in Major League Soccer is approaching quickly, and New York City FC will likely be active. Although the Pigeons are not expected to have a particularly busy window, some players might depart.

Certain players could leave due to a lack of playing time. They might be sold, traded, or loaned to another team. If the move is to a league outside MLS, the player could leave earlier, depending on the transfer window of the new league. Within MLS, the summer transfer window opens on July 18 and closes on August 14, during which time trades or transfers can occur.

This period also allows NYCFC to register players from other leagues. Recently, there was a discussion about what NYCFC needs to do this summer. The team might leverage a departure to make a new acquisition. While a busy summer isn’t anticipated, at least one or two players are expected to move. Andres Jasson has already left the team, so who will join him?

Here is a look at three players who could leave NYCFC this summer.

1. Talles Magno

At this rate, it seems almost certain that Talles Magno’s days with NYCFC are numbered. He has expressed frustration over his lack of playing time, hinting at a strained relationship with Nick Cushing. Additionally, rumors about him returning to Brazil are rampant.

Reports have linked him to Clube Atlético Mineiro in Brazil, though there is mixed information about whether this move will happen. Social media and news outlets have frequently mentioned this potential transfer. There are also reports that his former club, Vasco da Gama, has made contact.

It’s unfortunate that Magno’s NYCFC career may end this way. The club partially contributed to his poor development by playing him as a striker for too long. He had the potential to be one of the best wingers in MLS. Hopefully, Magno will find success and become the star fans always believed he could be.

2. Justin Haak

NYCFC Homegrown player Justin Haak, like Andres Jasson, has barely played this season. To date, he has appeared for a mere 85 minutes in MLS. The depth in the midfield means he is one of the last choices to play there. As a center-back, there hasn’t been much opportunity for him to play, even though the position lacks depth. Even so, players like Tayvon Gray and James Sands, who also play center-back as a secondary position, are ahead of him.

Therefore, it wouldn’t be surprising if Haak left NYCFC this summer. He could be a valuable asset in a trade for a natural center-back or left-back, positions that would help strengthen the backline. Moreover, he is talented enough to see more minutes elsewhere.

Haak could also be sold to another team, particularly in the USL Championship, where he would likely be a starter. He might also find starting opportunities with another MLS team. Regardless, the Homegrown player could easily be on the move in July or August.

3. Jovan Mijatović

Unfortunately, Jovan Mijatović cannot be overlooked on this list. The striker was expected to join NYCFC and become a star player. It was anticipated that he would start more matches, but instead, he has only started twice and made seven appearances. A player of his caliber and talent should not be left on the bench. He has been professional about it, but how long can he wait?

While it’s unlikely that Mijatović will leave after just joining the team, one never knows if he might try to push NYCFC and City Football Group to reconsider his situation by seeking opportunities elsewhere. He was starting games in Serbia and competing in the Champions League, so his current situation is likely frustrating for him.

Hopefully, Mijatović will find his form this summer and become more than just a backup to Raquinho.
