First signings completed after transfer embargo lift

Southend United have signed Joe Gubbins and Josh Walker.

The Shrimpers had been under a transfer embargo since May due to a winding-up petition, but the dismissal of that petition has allowed the National League side to recruit new players.

Centre-back Gubbins has re-signed from QPR. The 22-year-old made 10 appearances for Southend in 2022 and spent last season on loan at Accrington Stanley.

Walker, a former Tottenham and Fulham youth player, has also joined. He has previously played for Wealdstone, Hendon, Barnet, and Dagenham & Redbridge. The striker spent the second half of last season on loan at Gillingham from Burton Albion.

Both Gubbins and Walker have signed two-year deals with Kevin Maher’s side. Maher told the club’s official website:

“We’ve been short of players for a while, and it’s been frustrating watching everyone else bring players in.

“We’ve had to be patient, but we’re delighted with what we’ve been able to do and we’re grateful to everyone at the club for allowing us to do this.”
