BREAKING: Morecambe directors’ issue update on a possible buyout of the club

Morecambe have announced that discussions regarding a potential buyout of the club are reportedly at an ‘advanced stage,’ with the new season set to begin in five weeks. The news was shared on Saturday, ahead of the club’s gala dinner.

The statement from the Board of Directors read: “We wish to provide the following update.

“This morning, we spoke with Bond Group, who confirmed that talks with a prospective owner are at an advanced stage, with submission to the EFL planned for early next week.”

“Meanwhile, Derek Adams and his team are diligently working to build a competitive squad for the upcoming season.

“We appreciate the patience of every fan and friend of the club, and will provide further updates as soon as possible.”

The Shrimps were put up for sale in September 2022 by the owner, Bond Group.

During this period, wages have been paid late on two occasions, fans have held a demonstration of support, and players, managers, and the board have all called for a resolution to the situation.

Last month, Jason Whittingham of Bond Group informed Morecambe’s supporters’ organization, the Shrimps Trust, that four ‘credible buyers’ were interested in acquiring the club. He later told TalkSPORT on June 5 that a formal announcement was hoped to be made within 10-14 days.

No follow-up emerged, prompting the Trust to contact Whittingham for an update on June 19. Whittingham indicated he would provide an update after meeting the board on June 21. The Trust followed up three days later and received a response indicating an update would be given on June 28. However, a Trust social media post 24 hours later stated that no update had been provided.

A Trust post on Wednesday said Whittingham had finally responded to the June 29 statement.

The post read: “In his response, Jason advised that there had been developments which he would share on Monday, July 1, once he had updated the board of directors.

“Jason then emailed two minutes later, advising that this update would more likely be on Tuesday. At present, the Trust has received no update.

“The Trust has now emailed Jason again requesting a general update, as well as inquiring about meetings with potential suitors for the football club.”
