Southend United is thrilled to announce the permanent signing of centre-back Joe Gubbins.
Gubbins returns to Roots Hall as a free agent following his release from Championship side Queens Park Rangers. He has signed a two-year contract with the Blues.
Starting his career with Southampton, Gubbins joined QPR in 2017. He has previous experience in the National League with Aldershot and was on loan with Southend during the 2021/22 season. He spent four years with QPR, featuring in two games at the beginning of last season.
Upon his return, Gubbins expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I know the club’s ethos and the size of its fanbase, so I’m thrilled to be back and incredibly eager to get started.
“I anticipate a challenging season and aim to make a significant impact by aiding the team’s promotion push.
“Now that I’m more experienced, I aim to bring leadership qualities from the defense. I want to make my presence felt through communication, distribution, defensive solidity, and, most importantly, by contributing to the team’s clean sheet efforts.”
Head Coach Kevin Maher commented, “He performed excellently during his loan spell with us, and I’ve continued to follow his progress closely.
“He’s gained valuable experience, having played over 30 games for Accrington, which will undoubtedly benefit him. It’s a fantastic environment for development and will prepare him well for his return here.
“At his age, there’s still plenty of room for growth, and he brings quality with his left foot. He’s also enhanced his physical strength, adding versatility to our options on that side of the pitch.”
