Ole Miss transfer Trenton Lyons commits to NC State baseball

The utility man adds another piece to the 2025 Pack roster.

NC State continues to bolster its 2025 roster with another SEC transfer, this time adding Trenton Lyons from Ole Miss. The 6’3″, 185-pound utility player will enter the upcoming season as a sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining.

Lyons appeared in 21 games for the Rebels in 2024, making 7 starts. He posted a batting line of .256/.326/.282 with a 9.3% walk rate, 37.2% strikeout rate, and successfully stole 1 base in 1 attempt. While he primarily played catcher, he managed to throw out 2 of 14 (14.3%) opposing base runners. However, it is unlikely he will remain behind the dish with the Wolfpack.

This summer, Lyons has been playing with the Holly Springs Salamanders, primarily at shortstop, while also getting some time at catcher and third base. His athleticism and defensive versatility allow him to play nearly anywhere on the diamond. With the Salamanders, where he is teammates with 2024 Wolfpack players Jake Bechtel, Rob Nedry (currently in the transfer portal), and Hollis Fanning, Lyons is hitting .293/.391/.414 with a 7.0% walk rate, 13.0% strikeout rate, and 17 stolen bases in 18 attempts.

Trenton Lyons excels in nearly any role on a baseball field, making him a potential versatile asset for Ole Miss in 2024 and beyond. With impressive speed, clocking in at 6.6 seconds for the sixty-yard dash, he combines athleticism with a sturdy build standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 200 pounds. While primarily a catcher in high school with strong defensive skills, Lyons also boasts experience at shortstop, and the Ole Miss coaching staff sees potential for him in a corner outfield position as well. His considerable potential is already high, and if he proves himself against SEC pitching, he could become a standout player.
