Derby and Barnsley battle for award-winning Premier League player with six-figure asking price

Derby County will face competition from Barnsley for a Premier League player available for six figures this summer.

Derby County earned promotion to the Championship in the 2023/24 season, finishing second in League One behind Portsmouth.

The Rams spent only two years in England’s third tier, and Paul Warne is determined to avoid relegation in the upcoming campaign.

Despite the 2024 summer transfer window being open for less than a month, Derby has been working diligently to support Warne in securing Championship survival.

Notable additions include Ben Osborn from Sheffield United, along with Kayden Jackson and Jerry Yates, who have recently joined the squad at Pride Park.

However, further signings are anticipated at Derby this summer, particularly in the midfield department following the departures of Korey Smith and Conor Hourihane.

In an effort to strengthen their midfield, Derby has recently entered the race for Ipswich Town’s Idris El Mizouni.

El Mizouni was previously considered by the Derbyshire outfit before the 2023/24 season, and they have renewed their interest this summer.

Oxford United, who also secured promotion to the Championship in 2023/24, were reportedly competing with Derby for the 23-year-old’s signature.

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Barnsley have now entered the race for El Mizouni as well.

It is understood that Ipswich, now a Premier League team, are open to selling the player for a fee between £250,000-£500,000.

What Idris El Mizouni can bring to Derby County

Even with the recent arrival of Ben Osborn, Derby remains light in the central midfield area ahead of the 2024/25 season.

El Mizouni could provide much-needed quality depth to their ranks this summer.

Despite being only 23, El Mizouni was entrusted with the captain’s armband multiple times during his loan spell at Leyton Orient last season.

The Tunisia international made 45 appearances across all competitions and won the Leyton Orient Supporters Club Merit Award, highlighting his significant impact at the club.

El Mizouni has limited Championship experience, with only four appearances in the competition.

However, his performances last season indicate that he possesses the qualities needed to take the next step in his career.
