Smith, 25, departed Harrogate at the conclusion of the last season following a five-year tenure with the club.
Beginning his career at Barnsley, Smith made his professional debut in November 2018 and had a loan stint at Darlington before joining Harrogate in the summer of 2019.
During his time at Harrogate, he won the FA Trophy in 2020 and contributed to their promotion to League Two.
Towards the end of his spell at Harrogate, he also had loan spells at Scunthorpe and York.

The Shaymen gathered for a day of testing at Leeds Beckett University on Friday before commencing full training today (Monday).
According to the Town boss, things have been progressing “very well” since the start of pre-season preparations.
“We conducted pre-season testing on Friday, and everything went smoothly,” he informed the Courier.
“It was interesting to see the results, but everyone performed well, and it was a smoothly run day by Aaron Scholes.
“Today, we got back out on the grass, which is great to get the ball rolling and get the lads into it.
“They were very sharp; there were one or two who were really fantastic, but overall, it was a sharp session considering it was the first one back.”
Monday’s session included 27 players, including four youth team players and three trialists.
“Everyone is in really good shape,” Millington noted, “almost as if they haven’t been away in some cases.”
New signings Will Smith and Tom Pugh participated in training, while Florent Hoti and Ryan Galvin are still recovering from shoulder and ankle operations respectively.
“Those two, along with Jack Evans, had operations during the close season,” Millington explained. “Jack’s back in training because it was on his hand, but Flo and Ryan will return mid-to-late pre-season.”
Millington also mentioned that Jamie Cooke is close to finalizing a new contract with the club.
“We’re expecting that to be sorted out in the next 24 hours; it’s just finalizing the finer details of the contract,” he said.
Additionally, a deal for the next new signing is nearing completion.
“We’re at a similar stage to Jamie, just finalizing the paperwork and sorting out the finer points of the contract,” Millington confirmed.
