Northampton Town are eyeing up a move for departing Sutton United forward

Northampton Town are considering a move for departing Sutton United forward Omari Patrick, who is now a free agent following the expiration of his contract.

The 28-year-old played a significant role for Sutton United in League Two last season but was unable to help his team retain their EFL status. He is now available on a free transfer this summer.

However, according to a report from journalist Pete O’Rourke, it now appears that Patrick’s next destination could be Northampton Town in League One.

How did Patrick fare last season?

After arriving on a free transfer from Carlisle United, Patrick made 43 appearances in all competitions for Sutton United, scoring six goals and providing one assist.

His tally included a brace on his debut in a 5-1 victory against Notts County on the opening day of the 2023/24 campaign.

Patrick predominantly featured as a left-winger but is also capable of playing on the opposite side of the pitch.

Is this a good signing for Northampton?

Throughout his career, Patrick has made only 27 appearances in League One, with the majority of these coming off the bench.

The Cobblers secured their highest league position in over a decade last season by finishing in the top half of League One. They will likely aim to improve on that next season.

To achieve this, Northampton needs to strengthen their squad this summer, especially given the challenges posed by the arrival of teams like Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, Wrexham, and Stockport County in the division.

Patrick’s ability to play on either side of the pitch would enhance their versatility and squad options.

Should Patrick join the Cobblers?

Given that only 27 of his 204 first-team appearances have come in League One, there could be an argument that Patrick has unfinished business in the third tier, having experienced limited minutes with both Bradford and Burton Albion.

Northampton had their best season in recent memory last time out, creating an enticing environment for Patrick to potentially join this summer.

While he may face reduced opportunities for regular first-team minutes, the chance to showcase his abilities in League One could be too tempting to resist.
