JUST IN: Newport County sign 24 goals ex-Sheffield Utd forward

Newport County AFC has strengthened their offensive lineup by signing promising forward Oliver Greaves on a two-year contract.

The 24-year-old has earned a chance in the Football League after netting 24 goals for Derbyshire club Mickleover in the Southern League Northern Premier Division.

Greaves, who developed through the Sheffield United youth system, attracted attention from multiple clubs but chose to join Newport at Rodney Parade.

“There was considerable interest from several professional clubs last season,” said Greaves, whose move to County has been in the works for several months.

“As soon as I heard about Newport’s interest, I couldn’t wait to finalize the deal. I’m buzzing with excitement.

“Unfortunately, I had to step away from the professional game, which was tough, but I’ve gained valuable experience in non-league football, including a stint in Spain. Now, I’m eager to get started again.

“I bring a lot of skills to the table, and I hope to utilize all my experience at Newport.

“I consider myself an attack-minded player; I enjoy creating chances and making things happen. Scoring and assisting are the foundations of my game.”

Greaves had a loan spell at Barrow in the National League while at Sheffield United before playing for Dover, Matlock, Gainsborough, and Almunecar in Spain.

After playing in the East Midlands, he is now looking to make an impact in his first taste of the Football League.

He joins top scorer Will Evans, Luke Jephcott, Kiban Rai, and Nathan Wood as forward options for the Exiles, who are currently searching for a new head coach following the departure of Graham Coughlan.

Greaves is the Exiles’ fifth signing, reflecting their focus on providing Football League opportunities to emerging talents.

Defenders Ciaran Brennan, Anthony Glennon, and Joe Thomas, along with midfielder Kai Whitmore, have also joined on two-year contracts.
