Former Southend United defender joins National League New Comers

Louis Lomas, formerly of Southend United, has signed with National League debutants Braintree Town. Lomas arrived at Roots Hall in July 2022 but featured in only 22 matches before departing in February.

However, the 23-year-old will remain in the National League with Braintree Town, who secured promotion via the National League South play-offs last season.

Lomas is the second former Southend player to join Braintree this summer, following striker Callum Powell’s signing for the club last week.

Tory candidate Anna Firth has called on Southend United chairman Ron Martin to cease his grip on the club.

The consortium led by Justin Rees is advancing in their efforts to assume ownership of the club.

In a statement released tonight, Ms. Firth urged Martin to move forward, stating: “It is evident to everyone that the optimal path for the club’s future is for Ron Martin to promptly sell to the consortium.”

“Southend United and its supporters have endured prolonged suffering, and the time for change is now.

“This ongoing situation cannot persist, and it is unfair and unreasonable to expect the consortium to repeatedly rescue the club without obtaining rightful ownership.

“I implore Mr. Martin to release control without delay and cease holding the club hostage.”

Martin’s decision to relinquish control would have significant repercussions for Southend United.

“It is my understanding that this clears the path for the consortium to formally take ownership of the club, possibly as early as this weekend, thereby eliminating the necessity for the punitive £1 million bond demanded by the National League,” added Ms. Firth.

“While we remain hopeful that this sanction will not be required, it is yet another instance of sanctions being imposed on parties that are not the primary cause. Nevertheless, I remain committed to assisting in any capacity I can.

“As always, I stand ready to support all stakeholders. Whatever the immediate future holds for Southend United, I will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the fans and advocate for their best interests.”
