In 2022, Toronto Blue Jays’ All-Star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. famously stated his reluctance to ever play for the New York Yankees. However, by 2024, Guerrero appears to have reconsidered his stance.
The Blue Jays have struggled through a challenging first half of the 2024 MLB season, languishing at the bottom of the AL East with a 35-43 record. Analysts widely speculate that they may become sellers leading up to the trade deadline, with Guerrero being their most coveted asset.
Conversely, the Yankees are enjoying a resurgent season, currently leading their division with an impressive 52-28 record. Despite their strong position, they recently faced adversity with first baseman Anthony Rizzo sidelined for at least four weeks, prompting rumors of their interest in acquiring Guerrero among other potential trade targets at the position.
When questioned about the prospect of joining the Yankees in a recent interview with Virus Deportivo, Guerrero did not outright dismiss the possibility, marking a departure from his previous stance.
“Sometimes things are said,” Guerrero remarked. “It’s not that I’m retracting what I said about the Yankees. But this is a business. I’ve discussed it with my father, Vladimir Guerrero Sr., and my family. I’ve decided not to dwell on this topic further, as many have asked me about it.”
Guerrero emphasized his readiness to contribute positively to any team that acquires him but affirmed his current focus remains on supporting the Blue Jays.
If I get trade to #Yankees I will do my job and try to help that team or any team to win. I’m a professional and love this game #VladimirGuerreroJr told Omar from Virus Deportivo pic.twitter.com/5rQ5a6APzr

It’s worth noting that the Blue Jays have consistently expressed their reluctance to trade Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Despite this, the 2021 MLB home run leader remains under Toronto’s control through the next season, although significant contract extension talks have yet to commence.
In the 2024 season, Guerrero has maintained a batting average of .286 while hitting 10 home runs and driving in 35 RBIs.
