JUST IN: Carlisle United complete signing of Former Black Cats Midfielder

Carlisle United have announced the signing of midfielder Ethan Robson on a two-year deal following his departure from League Two side MK Dons.

Robson, 27, came through the ranks at Sunderland, having joined the club as a youngster.

The midfielder had loan spells at Dundee and Grimsby while at the Stadium of Light, before moving permanently to Blackpool in 2020.

He was then loaned to MK Dons before making the move permanent in the summer of 2022. Robson made 60 appearances over two seasons with MK Dons and was an integral part of their squad during his time there.

Manager Paul Simpson told the club’s website…

“Ethan is a really good footballer. He’s left-footed so he gives us a little bit more balance in that area.

“We’ve got quite a few players who you’d say were a number six type midfielder who can control the midfield, whereas Ethan is a little bit more forward-thinking. He’s got good legs about him to go and get forward and get in the box.

“He’s got a wand of a left foot for finding that pass. In the past couple of seasons he hasn’t been the one getting the assists for goals, but he’s the one finding the pass that leads to the assist.

“I want him to add more goals to his game, when you’ve got a sweet left foot like he has, I want him to go and test goalkeepers.

“We’re trying to get competition in all areas, I want it to be a really competitive group, and Ethan will add to that.

“He’s also a really good character and he’s got good experience. I think all of the players we’ve brought in so far have been the same.”

It was also announced that Ethan Robson will wear the number seven shirt for the Cumbrians ahead of the upcoming 2024/25 season.

Robson is the fifth summer signing for the League Two side, as the club aims to build a squad capable of making an immediate return to League One after their relegation last season.

What will Robson add to the Carlisle United side?

The 27-year-old will bring much-needed quality to the midfield for Paul Simpson’s side, which lacked real creativity last season in League One.

Robson has demonstrated great quality on the ball and excellent technical skills, with the manager even referring to his left foot as a “wand.” Being left-footed, Robson will add much-needed balance to a squad predominantly made up of right-footed players.

The midfielder has also shown a knack for scoring, netting twice for SPFL side Dundee, three times for Grimsby Town, and twice for MK Dons over the course of his career.
