Duke basketball gives warning to NBA GMs about Blue Devil prospects ahead of draft

The Blue Devils are eagerly anticipating the NBA teams’ selections for their two draft prospects this Thursday night. With the NBA Draft approaching, Duke basketball is emphasizing to general managers the importance of considering their two prospects, Jared McCain and Kyle Filipowski.

Both players are projected to be picked in the first round of the upcoming draft, though McCain appears to be in a stronger position than Filipowski, who is currently slated towards the end of the first round in recent mock drafts.

In a social media post on Tuesday afternoon, Duke asserted that “GMs will someday regret it” if they overlook Duke’s impressive NBA Draft history, which includes producing 30 lottery picks.

Under Coach Jon Scheyer’s tenure with the Duke coaching staff over the past decade, the program has seen 22 first-round picks and has had at least one player selected in 24 of the last 26 drafts, with a total of 40 first-round selections during that span.

Last year, Dereck Lively and Dariq Whitehead became Duke’s first draft picks under Coach Scheyer’s leadership, both being selected in the first round.

The latest NBA mock draft from ESPN positions Jared McCain as the No. 16 overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers.

McCain is expected to make an immediate impact for any team that selects him, bringing strong shooting skills and maturity on the court. He averaged 14.3 points per game during his single season at Duke and shot an impressive 41.4% from 3-point range.

Meanwhile, Kyle Filipowski is currently slated to join the Milwaukee Bucks as the No. 23 overall pick.

Initially considered a potential lottery pick after opting to return to Duke for his sophomore year, Filipowski posted averages of 16.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. However, his draft stock has slightly declined in recent weeks according to various mock drafts.

Both McCain and Filipowski will be present in the green room at the Barclays Center for the NBA Draft, scheduled to commence at 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN/ABC.
