Tranmere Rovers star retires at 36 – ‘I got to live my dream!’

Luke Daniels, a former West Brom custodian who spent nine years at the Hawthorns, has announced his retirement from professional football.

Daniels was released by Forest Green Rovers this summer and will now embark on a different journey.

In a social media post shared on X, Daniels stated, “After 20 years it’s time to retire from playing football.

I feel honored to have had the opportunity to play for so many great football clubs throughout my career.

It’s been a blessing to have shared a dressing room with countless talented players and incredible individuals.

I’m grateful to have lived my dream and experienced the beauty of the game alongside such remarkable people.

The majority of his tenure at West Brom would be spent on loan, playing for Motherwell, Shrewsbury Town, Tranmere Rovers, Rochdale, Bristol Rovers, and Southend United.

Daniels finally left West Brom in 2014 to join Scunthorpe United, where he was first-choice for two and a half seasons. Brentford signed him in 2017, and he made 36 appearances for the Bees, reverting as a secondary custodian.

Middlesbrough hired him when his contract with Brentford expired in 2021, and he made 12 appearances for the Boro before leaving in 2013. Daniels eventually joined Forest Green Rovers and played 20 games for the Gloucestershire club, but he was unable to prevent them from being relegated for the second time in a row, dropping out of the Football League.
