Carlisle United and Rotherham United sign Reading defenders

Terell Thomas and Zak Jules, two former Reading defenders, left Charlton Athletic and Exeter City, respectively, to join Carlisle United and Rotherham United in the EFL.

Thomas returned to Charlton after playing twice for the Royals in 2021–2022. Nathan Jones decided not to renew his contract after making more than 60 appearances and taking third place in the Player of the Season competition the previous season.

Thomas will try to assist the Cumbrians in making an instant return to the third division after they were demoted to League Two following their poor performance in League One last season.

Jules, meantime, progressed through the ranks in Berkshire, enjoyed seven loan stints, and was never called up to the first team.

The defender built his reputation at Walsall and MK Dons before joining Exeter in 2023.

Throughout his lone season in Devon, the former Scotland youth international was a constant, scoring on his return to RG2 during the Royals’ 3-2 victory on New Year’s Day.

The defender will be one of the favourites to win the championship under Steve Evans after moving to Rotherham United.

Three League One teams, including Reading, have not made a signing and cannot advance until the off-field ownership saga is resolved.
