Just In: Swindon Town Complete coup with signing of League Two Defender

Ryan Delaney, an Irish defender, has joined Swindon Town after his contract with League Two side Newport County expired.

Ryan Delaney, a 27-year-old center-back, is the latest addition to Mark Kennedy’s team as Swindon gets ready for the 2024–2025 League Two season.

Who is Ryan Delaney?

The Irishman is an experienced EFL centre-back standing at 6’5ft. He began his professional career over in Ireland with Wexford at 18 years-old. Impressive performances saw him earn a move to Burton Albion in 2016.

Delaney was sent out on loan to Cork City where he made 30 appearances for the Rebel Army and netted an impressive six goals, helping Cork win the League of Ireland Premier Division.

Moves to Rochdale and AFC Wimbledon saw Delaney rack up 73 appearances. He then joined Bolton in 2020 and was a part of the side that achieved promotion from League Two under Ian Evatt.

The 27-year-old’s next stop was Morecambe, where he played for The Shrimps for two years before going on loan to Scunthorpe United in 2022.

Most recently, he captained Newport County, a divisional foe and fellow League Two Side team. Throughout the 23–24 season, Delaney made 30 appearances and managed just one goal.

What does Delaney bring to the table?

Delaney will bring a wealth of experience to SN1, as the club website has confirmed his signing. Delaney has made 308 appearances in his career at various levels, including League One, League Two, and the League of Ireland Premier Division.

He also offers experience in promotions. Bolton Wanderers, who made 27 matches and scored three goals in League Two, were promoted automatically from League Two in the 20–21 season.

Lastly, he provides the Swindon squad with a robust presence and great defensive ability—a quality the Robins have been lacking for some seasons.

His 6’5″ height should help him attack set pieces, another one of Swindon’s weaknesses, and win aerial duals.

How important is this signing?

Delaney’s signing with Swindon Town gives the League Two team even more defensive security.

His track record of winning promotions might be a huge advantage for Mark Kennedy’s team as they want to improve on their underwhelming 2023–2024 campaign.
