Geelong Man To Be Recognised at Hall of Fame

Alongside Travis Varcoe and Harry Taylor, Chris Scott will be inducted into the Geelong Football Club Hall of Fame on Saturday night.

In his 322 games as the Cats’ senior coach, Scott has guided his team to two premierships and 11 finals campaigns in a string of excellence. In 2023, he will surpass Reg Hickey for the most games as Geelong’s senior coach, and he has maintained an amazing 68% win rate throughout his career.

Last week, the Cats coach joined Cameron Ling and Meg McDonald on “To the Final Bell” and expressed his gratitude for the chance to lead the Geelong Football Club.

Even as a player, I don’t usually focus on these kinds of things,” Scott remarked.

It did provide me with a brief window of time to reflect about the chance I was given to visit the Cats.

“I started out quite young—34, which is unusual. It is even more unusual to join an organisation that was in excellent standing; typically, when a team requires a new coach, things aren’t going too well.

“I have been extremely thankful for the opportunity I have been given over a long period of time, as that wasn’t the case at the Cats.”

After taking over in 2011, Scott was successful right away, leading the squad to a Premiership in his first year as the club’s coach. Over the following ten years, the talented coach kept his team competitive.

In 2022, however, he experienced even greater success as the Cats won 16 straight games and won another championship.

The 2011 Premiership captain, Cameron Ling, was also made a Legend that evening, making it a memorable evening for Scott as he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Ling talked on the immediate effect Scott had on the team, as the two worked together as coach and captain to return Geelong to Premiership success.

“Now that I think back on it, I value the year that we did spend together; it was just what I needed. I had hoped for more time with Scotty.

“To have that experience with Scotty, where we collaborated incredibly well and had the freedom to discuss ideas, made it feel for the first time like two coworkers pursuing a common objective.”

On Saturday, June 22, Cameron Ling will become a Legend while Chris Scott, Travis Varcoe, and Harry Taylor will be inducted into the Geelong Football Club Hall of Fame.

The 2024 Geelong Cats Hall of Fame Dinner tickets are now available.
