Charlton Athletic complete deal to sign 22-year-old Championship man

This summer, Charlton Athletic is getting ready for another season in League One.

After taking over as manager in February, Nathan Jones’ Addicks placed 16th in the third tier.

After a strong finish to the season and managing to stay out of the relegation zone in the latter few months, Millwall finished 13th in the Championship.

In as many years, he had gone on loan from the Den three times, the first two times being to St Johnstone in Scotland and Leyton Orient in League Two.

He has only played for the Lions as a senior once, and it appears that he may be leaving soon.

Following reports that the Addicks were interested in the defender last week, Charlton Athletic is now said to have had a bid accepted for the young player. Mitchell is expected to be Jones’ fourth summer addition.

Finding a new home

The 22-year-old needs to settle at a club. It’s quite evident he didn’t have much of a future at Millwall despite coming through their academy six years ago.

However, during his time at the club and several loan spells, he has built up a decent amount of senior experience. Last season gave him his first taste in the third tier, and now it seems he may end up back there, but this time at The Valley.

Mitchell has valuable experience under his belt, but he doesn’t have much of it. The defender will benefit from finding a permanent home this summer and it should allow him to settle and focus on playing the best football he can.

Moving on

This season, Jones’ team needs to get better. Only four of the Welsh manager’s first 16 games in charge at The Valley ended in victories, but with the summer window approaching, there is no time for justifications or blunders.

Now that Charlton Athletic has seen far too many seasons of mediocrity in the third division, the Addicks need to start consistently finishing in the top half and advancing toward the top six.

This summer, they have already brought on three new players, and it appears that they are not stopping since a fourth is supposedly almost finished.

It’s a pivotal season for Jones and the team. It’s important that they get off to a quick start, and it will be interesting to watch what type of start they have.
