Bradford City keeper joins league two rivals defensive revamp

Next season, Alex Bass, the former keeper, will stand in the way of CITY as the newest addition to Notts County’s makeover.

The 26-year-old left Sunderland following an unpleasant stint and joined the Magpies.

Bass played 48 games on loan at Wimbledon last season after making just two appearances in his two years with the Championship team.

Emmanuel Osadebe’s goal at Cherry Red Records Stadium defeated him during Kevin McDonald’s brief managership, but he preserved a shutout in the scoreless rematch at Valley Parade in February.

As Notts rebuilt a defence that had given up the most goals in League Two, Bass now teams up with Matty Platt.

“We believe Alex was the best-performing keeper in League Two last season – and rank him very highly among his peers in League One – so we’re absolutely delighted to welcome him to Meadow Lane,” club director Richard Montague stated on the team’s website.

“He’s a commanding presence who we feel will give us a huge advantage in dealing with the threats we struggled against in 2023–24, along with fellow new defensive signings Matty Platt and Jacob Bedeau.”

“He’s a player we believe has a lot to offer on the ball, which is so crucial to our style of play, and a fantastic shot-stopper, as evidenced by his 16 clean sheets last season.”

Derek Adams surprisingly brought Bass to Valley Parade in January 2022 when he came from Portsmouth on loan to take Richard O’Donnell’s position in the City goal.

The next day, he made his debut in a 2-1 victory at Walsall, making an unusual save with his face.

After Mark Hughes was appointed the following month, Bass maintained his top spot with 21 appearances for City and six clean sheets.

At the time, the 26-year-old said that his stint of six months with the Bantams had improved him as a goalie.
