According to The Telegraph, Sheffield United is still in negotiations with Premier League teams on a new contract for John Egan.
Sheffield United is returning to the Championship, and manager Chris Wilder anticipates a busy summer as the team gets ready for games in the second division once more.

This year, the Blades are saying goodbye to several first-team regulars. Last month, it was confirmed that Wes Foderingham, Chris Basham, Oliver Norwood, and Ben Osborn would be leaving.

seasoned centre back Another player whose contract expires this summer is John Egan. But as the month’s conclusion approaches, there has been no word on his whereabouts.

The Telegraph is now providing an update.

According to them, contract negotiations between Sheffield United and Egan are still “locked,” with the club trying to retain him. However, there appears to be interest from other teams as well. Two Premier League teams are evaluating the 31-year-old as a possible free transfer acquisition.

Egan signed his most recent contract extension in the summer of 2020 after six years at Bramall Lane.

A key player to keep?

Sheffield United will see a lot of change this summer. Many mainstays have already left, and it wouldn’t be shocking if important assets were sold after the loss to the Championship.
It might be crucial for Wilder to hang onto someone like Egan because athletes with such a reputation tend to move on.

The Blades have lost three players with a wealth of experience and leadership qualities: Foderingham, Basham, and Norwood. Another senior figure in the dressing room would be leaving if Egan followed them through the door.

The Irishman has participated in 73 Premier League games and more than 200 Championship contests. He has made 224 appearances for Sheffield United overall, often serving as the team’s captain.

Tempted back to the Premier League

It remains to be seen just how Egan’s future pans out but with two Premier League sides eyeing a possible cut-price deal, few would blame him if he took the chance to return to the top-flight.

He’d be a shrewd signing on a free transfer with such experience to his name. Egan can become a leader in any dressing room, hence why keeping him would be of such great value to Sheffield United.

At the end of this month, contracts will officially expire in less than two weeks.

It implies that the Blades’ chances of retaining their stalwart centre back are running out. After bidding farewell to several contemporary idols this summer, fans will be excited to see Egan sign new contracts.
