Former Rotherham United man becomes free agent; should Steve Evans sign him

A former utility player for Rotherham United and Sheffield United, has left Hashtag United, a non-league team.

The 39-year-old has played for the Isthmian League Premier Division’s minnows, who are based in the seventh rung of the English football hierarchy, for the past two seasons.

Greg Halford, however, acknowledged that he is moving on via X, the old Twitter. “It’s time to announce that I’m leaving Hashtag United,” Halford declared. I decided before the season ended, which is why I missed this year’s @TST7v7 [7-aside competition].

“I want to express my gratitude to everyone connected to the club, especially Spencer Owen, the chairman of Hashtag. I’m hoping for the best for the team going forward.

An EFL veteran, Halford won a Championship promotion with Cardiff City and has played for clubs including Sheffield United and Rotherham.

After spending a season on loan at Sheffield United from Sunderland, he initially relocated to Yorkshire in 2008. In 2015, Halford came back to the county after two years at New York Stadium and a deal with Rotherham.

In 2022, the defender who had previously played for Nottingham Forest and Portsmouth went down the non-league ladder to join Billericay Town. Later, he became a member of Hashtag, a group started by Spencer Owen, a popular YouTuber.

They are currently one promotion away from the National League South after experiencing a spectacular ascent through the levels.
