Ebbsfleet United adds new defender to squad

A defender who joined the team on loan eight years ago has now become a permanent member of Ebbsfleet.

Louis John, a centre defender, has joined from Sutton United after both parties mutually agreed to terminate his contract at Gander Green Lane.

After spending nine years with Sutton, where he amassed 283 appearances, the 30-year-old is back at Stonebridge Road after making two appearances for the Fleet during a brief loan period in November 2016.

John said to FleetTV, “I remember coming in back then; it was quite early on in my career.” “The club wanted to advance and was making progress. Though my stay was brief, I had a great experience, and I’m happy to be returning.

“I spent a total of nine seasons at Sutton, and throughout that time, we accomplished a lot. Although I had a nice experience there, I believe that this is the ideal time for me to start over, and maybe we can accomplish comparable goals here.

“I think I can lead from the back and assist the younger players because I feel like a leader.” John, who began his career with Sutton and has also had stints with Crawley and Cambridge United, appeared in 21 games during the 2023–24 season but was sidelined for a large portion of it due to an injury.

During his tenure with Sutton, he helped the team win both the National League South and the National League. He also played in the EFL Trophy final at Wembley, where Sutton lost to Rotherham after extra time.

This summer, Sutton will join Jim Kellermann and Lewis Page as new hires at Ebbsfleet, as manager Danny Searle evidently prioritises hiring players with National League experience to boost his team.
