Wigan Athletic offer another Academy graduate new contract

Harry McHugh, who just inked a one-year contract extension with the team, has been assured of “opportunities next season” at the first team level.

The 21-year-old, who can play in both midfield and defence, has been awarded by manager Shaun Maloney for demonstrating a “high level of professionalism and desire” to leave his mark.

“We are happy that Harry has extended his contract with the football team,” the Latics president stated.

“Harry hasn’t had an easy route in terms of his path from the Academy but has always shown a high level of professionalism and desire.”Last season, Harry showed off his skill by making several first-team appearances in a variety of positions. He also had a great loan in Scotland. Harry understands that he will have opportunities the following season if he keeps up his proper work ethic, and I am excited to help him grow.”

McHugh began his career with Everton and joined Latics at the Under-13 level. He spent the second half of the previous season on loan at Ayr United.

The Liverpool player said, “I am thrilled to sign a contract extension with this fantastic football club.”

Since I was a youngster, it has been my home, and I am excited to continue my journey here. “With a big season approaching, and after witnessing the manager’s dedication to providing young players with opportunities over the past 12 months, I’m hoping I can get into the first team more frequently,” the player said.

Before the Latics made their debut as PDL National Champions in 2021, McHugh led the team to back-to-back Professional Development League North titles at the Under-18 level while he was in the Academy.After moving up to the first team last season, he made six appearances and scored his first goal as a senior in the 6-1 victory over Leicester City Under-21s.
