QPR eye free transfer swoop for World Cup midfielder

A source claims that Birmingham City is interested in signing Joe Morrell, an out-of-contract midfield player for Portsmouth.

According to Phil Cadden, a journalist for The Sun who covers the Welsh national team, Blues, QPR, and Wrexham are all vying for the Welshman’s signing. Pompey is expected to depart Fratton Park this summer after opting not to activate a one-year contract extension.

Morrell’s future on the South Coast is described as “unclear” by our friends at The News. Although talks are ongoing, Pompey wants Morrell to continue with them, and they know that if a deal cannot be reached in the next weeks, they could lose him for nothing.

On June 30, he will formally become a free agent. With his contract expiring soon, he is free to negotiate with other teams. Morrell has been sidelined since February due to a knee injury, and he is presently recovering at Pompey’s training facility.

The 27-year-old has participated in 121 games in League One, giving him a wealth of experience in the competition. This season, he made 27 appearances for Pompey as they won the league. Morrell started his career at Bristol City and has since played for Lincoln City, Luton Town, and Cheltenham Town.

Morrell is Jordan James’ international colleague for the Blues, and he has 37 Wales caps, two of which were at the 2022 World Cup. Following Morrell’s ban, James—who was being pursued by several Premier League teams—took Morrell’s spot in the starting lineup for Wales. Morrell has subsequently found it difficult to return to the first team.
